The Eliza O’Hara Award

A new award is being introduced this year to a student in the age bracket up to 16 years of age to the individual who submits the best newsletter article for the coming spring newsletter. The Eliza O’Hara Award is both in an annual trophy for the association, by means of plaque for the student as donated by the O’Hara family and by means of a monetary award from the GPCA.

In Memory of Eliza O'Hara

Oct 1923 – Apr 2005

Eliza Florence O’Hara (nee Steele) came from Northern Ontario to the Gloucester Pool area in 1940's to take a position as School Teacher at the Big Chute Power Station. Eliza was the only teacher for seven grades. Her most memorable and proudest accomplishment was taking the students to Midland so they could attend their very first Music festival. What is now a 40 minute grocery run was a full day of traveling by foot and by boat to Severn Falls and then by train (switching trains as well) to Midland. To their credit they cleaned up. Eliza married Jack O’Hara in 1949 and continued teaching part and full time until retirement in 1986. Eliza was always genuinely interested in what you were doing, your accomplishments, your dreams, all the time sharing her enthusiasm for life and learning with you. Eliza had a lot of love for the children, many of whom worked at O'Hara Point Marine Park during the past 40 years, and return year after year to visit Grandma Liz, often bringing with them their spouses, children and grandchildren. Eliza's wish was that you be the very best you can at whatever you did. This trophy was donated by the O’Hara Family for an Elementary through High School pupil to write an article about the area for the GPCA Newsletter. Eliza poured her heart and soul into this area for 60 years. This competition embodies what Eliza thought important, strive to be your best, do not give up and mind your spelling and grammar.

Eliza O’Hara award was presented by John O’Hara to encourage children to post articles in the newsletter. Recipients this year are Danielle and Brittany Pratt this year for joint article. Focus this year to be summer activities by children when they write assignments in fall of year for school. Monetary award also to be provided to recipient.
